DermEstimator vs. Valant EHR
Valant is a behavioral-health EHR and practice management platform. DermEstimator is a dermatology patient cost estimator. They are not competitors β and if you run Valant in a derm setting, you almost certainly still need a way to answer "what will this cost me?" at the front desk.
What Valant actually is
Valant Medical Solutions builds the Valant EHR Suite, a cloud-based electronic health record and practice management platform positioned squarely for behavioral health. Its own site describes the product as a behavioral health EHR serving therapists, prescribers, psychiatry clinicians, PMHNPs, practice managers and billing managers, across standard outpatient care, intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP).
The feature set reflects that focus: scheduling, clinical documentation and note templates, prospective patient management, consent and intake forms, outcome measures, billing and utilization review, online bill pay, reporting, and an optional revenue cycle management service staffed by a behavioral health billing team. It is a capable system for the market it was built for.
What it is not is a dermatology platform. There is no dermatology-specific procedure coding layer, no Multiple Procedure Payment Reduction logic, no Mohs staging or add-on code handling, and β most relevant here β no native patient cost estimator or Good Faith Estimate generator anywhere in the published product documentation.
Why practices switch from Valant β and why most of them shouldn't
When derm practices tell us they are "looking at switching from Valant," what they almost always mean is that Valant does not do one specific thing they need: produce a fast, accurate, defensible patient cost estimate for a dermatology visit. That is a real gap, but ripping out an EHR is a disproportionate response to it.
The gap is dermatology billing nuance, not EHR quality. Dermatology estimates depend on details that a broad, behavioral-health-rooted EHR/PM system was never designed to model. A single visit can stack a biopsy, a destruction, an excision and a repair. Secondary procedures on the same day are subject to MPPR, which reduces the allowed amount on lower-valued procedures. Mohs surgery adds stage-based add-on codes such as 17312 and 17314, each with its own reduction treatment. Allowed amounts differ across all 109 Medicare localities. Miss any one of these and the number you quote the patient is wrong.
Good Faith Estimates are a separate compliance obligation. Under the No Surprises Act, self-pay and uninsured patients are entitled to a written Good Faith Estimate for scheduled services. Valant does not ship a GFE generator. Practices in that position build the estimate by hand in a spreadsheet or a Word template, with no audit trail and no consistency between staff members.
The better framing is complementary, not replacement. DermEstimator is a point solution. It runs alongside any EHR β Valant included β and does exactly one job: turn a set of CPT codes and a payer plan into an accurate, MPPR-aware patient estimate and, when needed, a compliant GFE. Your clinical records, scheduling and claims stay exactly where they are. Nothing about your Valant configuration changes.
Practices that genuinely should leave Valant are the ones whose clinical workflow no longer fits a behavioral health system at all β derm-specific charting templates, dermatopathology tracking, image capture, cosmetic inventory. That is an EHR decision, and DermEstimator is not part of it. If the only unmet need is patient cost transparency at the front desk, adding a $30/month tool is the cheaper and faster fix.
Pricing: published numbers vs. a custom quote
Valant does not publish per-seat or per-provider pricing. Its pricing page states that quotes are structured around the number and type of provider licenses an organization needs, plus any optional features or add-ons, and that the final figure varies with practice size, specialty, provider count and type, workflow needs, functionality level and required support. Valant describes this as tiered, customized pricing, and prospective customers request a quote. We are not going to invent a number for a vendor that doesn't publish one β treat Valant as custom quote-based enterprise pricing, with an implementation and onboarding process attached.
DermEstimator publishes its pricing, and there is no sales call in the way:
Derm Basic β $30/month. One login, all core features: the full CPT library, 2026 MPFS locality-adjusted rates, automatic MPPR handling, and the one-click Good Faith Estimate generator.
Derm Pro β $50/month. Everything in Derm Basic, plus the AI coding & billing assistant and unlimited named staff logins, so every person at the front desk has their own account.
7-day free trial, no credit card, no contract. Month-to-month billing, cancel from account settings at any time.
The two price structures aren't really comparable, because the scopes aren't. Valant's quote covers an entire clinical and administrative system. DermEstimator's $30 or $50 covers one workflow β the cost conversation β and it is designed to be additive to whatever you already pay for your EHR. For a practice already under a Valant agreement, adding DermEstimator does not require renegotiating anything.
Migration: there isn't one
To be explicit: DermEstimator is not a Valant replacement. It does not import your records, it does not sync with your Valant database, and it does not need to. There is no migration project, no data conflict, no downtime, and no risk to your existing system of record.
Adoption looks like this. A staff member signs up, logs in through a browser, and keeps DermEstimator open in a tab next to Valant. When a patient calls to schedule a Mohs case or asks at check-in what a biopsy and excision will run them, the front desk enters the procedure codes and payer plan into DermEstimator, gets the estimate in under a minute, and β if the patient is self-pay or uninsured and requests one β generates the NSA-compliant Good Faith Estimate from the same screen. Then they go back to Valant for scheduling and documentation exactly as before.
Because Valant has no native derm-specific cost estimator, the two tools never overlap or contradict each other. Nothing has to be turned off in Valant for DermEstimator to work, and if you later change EHRs, DermEstimator is unaffected β it is EHR-agnostic by design.
Frequently asked questions
Does Valant include a patient cost estimator?
Valant's published product materials describe scheduling, clinical documentation, billing, utilization review, online bill pay, intake forms and reporting β there is no native CPT-level patient cost estimator or Good Faith Estimate generator listed. Practices that need to quote a patient's out-of-pocket cost before the visit typically do it manually or with a separate tool.
Is DermEstimator a replacement for Valant?
No. DermEstimator does not chart, prescribe, schedule, or submit claims. It is a point solution for patient cost estimates and NSA Good Faith Estimates. If you run Valant, you keep Valant β DermEstimator simply opens in a browser tab at the front desk.
How much does Valant cost?
Valant does not publish per-seat pricing. Its pricing page states that quotes are built around the number and type of provider licenses plus optional add-ons, and vary by practice size, specialty, workflow needs and support level. You have to request a custom quote. DermEstimator publishes its price: $30/month for Derm Basic and $50/month for Derm Pro.
Do we need to migrate any data to start using DermEstimator?
No. There is no data migration, no integration project, and no conflict with your existing EHR. Front desk staff enter the procedure codes and payer details for the visit being quoted, and the estimate or GFE is generated on the spot.
Why would a dermatology practice be on Valant at all?
Valant is built for behavioral health, but multi-specialty groups and organizations that grew out of a behavioral health line of service sometimes run it across other departments. In those cases the derm-specific billing logic β MPPR, Mohs add-on codes, locality-adjusted MPFS rates β is not something the platform was designed to model.
Keep Valant. Add accurate patient estimates.
7-day free trial. No credit card, no contract, no migration. Plans from $30/month after trial.
